The Irente School for the Blind is one of three schools in Tanzania for visually impaired children, located in the Usambara Mountains.

Two years ago, while accompanying my friend Katharina on her trip to the region, we had the opportunity to visit the school she had been familiar with since living in Lushoto back in the 1970s. During our visit, we discovered that the school was hoping to increase its income by selling their dairy farming and vegetable, striving for greater independence.

We were inspired by the school's initiative and decided to contribute to their fundraising efforts for improving five small, already established projects. We were deeply moved to witness the remarkable dedication and courage with which the children helped to visualize these projects for their school. Here are some of the pictures that we created.

Impressions from irente school for the blind

The Irente School for the Blind is an inclusive institution for blind, partially sighted, and normally sighted children, with one third being albinos. It is touching to see how these children support each other in their everyday life, guided by committed teachers. These educators cultivate a nurturing environment where the children not only engage in academic learning but also acquire essential life skills, ranging from washing clothes to caring for plants and animals. This is crucial, given that many students face challenges returning to their families due to their disabilities.
